Remember Me Was Originally a PlayStation Exclusive

An interesting tidbit popped-up on Games Industry International concerning the recently-announced Capcom title Remember Me. According to an interview the website conducted with developer Dontnod’s co-founder Oskar Guilbert, the game wasn’t always a multi-platform affair and was, at one time, in development only for PlayStation 3 under the direction of Sony itself.

“Sony wanted to focus on a different type of game and we don’t really fit with that,” Guilbert explained. “But we’re in a very good relationship with them. They stopped a number of games last year at Sony and we took back the IP rights and were able to continue to develop it thanks to the support of the investors. We were then able to sign the game to a publisher who’s [sic] portfolio is a better fit for the game.”

The game was known as Adrift when under development for Sony, but Capcom has since acquired the rights of the game directly from Dontnod once Sony abandoned the project.

This is an interesting development for Sony in particular, which prides itself on exclusive content for its platforms, even if those games occasionally come from outside of its extensive first and second party developer ecosystem. The company still introduced a number of exclusives for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita at Gamescom this year, including the likes of Media Molecule’s Tearaway, Guerilla Games’ Killzone: Mercenary and Studio Japan’s Rain and Puppeteer, and it’s fascinating to think that if things went a little differently, there may have been one more.
