David Cage on Hollywood Talent and an Over Reliance on Technology

Speaking to assembled press during a an open Q&A session at gamescom, Quantic Dream's gregarious game director and co-CEO David Cage has outlined the kinds of games he believes will benefit from recruiting major Hollywood talent in the future.

"If we keep making things based on violence and platform jumping, you don't need Ellen Page to do this, to be honest. It would be a waste of time and a waste of money," Cage said.

"If we keep making things based on violence and platform jumping, you don't need Ellen Page to do this, to be honest. It would be a waste of time and a waste of money.

"If the games we make continue to go in that direction, then no [we don't need Hollywood actors]. Now, if there are more and more games trying to create something more meaningful with proper actors, proper story and a proper portrayal of emotions in games, then we will need talented actors."

Cage was speaking during a presentation of the technical elements of the performance capture used to shoot upcoming PS3 action game Beyond: Two Souls. The filming took 12 months due to both the techniques used to capture vocal, facial and body performance and the 2000 page script.

The performances by Ellen Page and the support cast were tracked by 65 cameras, compared to Heavy Rains 28, which helped shoot performances both from additional angles and at a higher fidelity than Heavy Rain. It also allowed for the creation of bigger staging areas and enabled increased interaction with the environment as well as capturing multiple actors at once, which Cage said facilitated more believable interaction between them.

However, despite increased technical fidelity of Beyond: Two Souls, Cage issued a note of caution on getting carried away with technology.

"The thing is, the better the hardware the more time we spend to improve the visuals to take advantage of the hardware.

"Technology remains a tool: you can have the best tool in the world but if you have nothing to say it will remain an empty experience."
