Legendary Artist Joe Kubert Passes Away

News broke this morning about legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert passing away at the age of 85. Kubert began his illustrious career in comics at the tender age of 12, but would go on to co-create such characters as Sgt. Rock and Tor, as well as enjoy influential runs on books like Hawkman and Tarzan. Kubert had worked consistently in the industry for decades, most recently inking Before Watchmen: Nite Owl for one of his sons, Andy Kubert. This October, DC Comics is slated to publish Joe Kubert Presents, a new six issue anthology series that features a Hawkman story written and drawn by Kubert along with other creators working on his creations.

In 1976, Kubert founded The Kubert School, a technical college with a focus on sequential art and commercial illustration. Some of the school's alumni include some of today's best known comic book artists, like Amanda Conner, Stephen Bissette, Alex Maleev, Shane Davis, and Rags Morales.

Kubert's influence and legacy will be forever part of the comic book industry as we know it, and we offer our sympathies to his family and friends. Please sound off in the comments below with your favorite works of Kubert or perhaps memories of meeting him at a convention.

Joey is IGN's Comics Editor and a comic book creator himself. Follow Joey on Twitter, or find him on IGN. Ragman is one of his favorite characters -- RIP, Joe.
